Deadline Approaching for Gmail Users to Switch from Basic HTML Version

For many years, Gmail has been the preferred email platform for numerous businesses and individuals, who rely on its features for important tasks. With its various new and advanced features, Gmail has become a popular choice among users, making email management easier. However, Google has recently made the decision to discontinue Gmail’s basic HTML view, which was particularly helpful during internet slowdowns. To learn more about this decision, click here.

No more HTML basic view of Gmail

According to a report shared by Google Support, Gmail users will have to switch to the “standard” view as they will retire the basic HTML view starting in January 2024. The release said: “You can view Gmail in your browser in HTML Basic View. Until January 2024. After that date, Gmail will automatically switch to Standard View.” However, the company did not announce the reason for the decision. However, we expect that the change will only provide benefits to its users.

The HTML view version did not support advanced features like the Gmail we use on our computers and smartphones. Previously, it was developed to meet the requirements during times of lower connectivity. Quoting a Google spokesperson, The Register said: “Gmail’s basic HTML views are previous versions of Gmail that were replaced by modern successors more than 10 years ago, and do not include all the functionality of the Gmail feature.”

The HTLM view is designed for old devices and browsers, but due to lack of features and functionality, Google only allows the standard version, which offers features such as chat, spell check, keyboard shortcuts, adding or importing contacts, custom “from” addresses, rich formatting, and more change.

This news may come as a shock to users of a different HTML view in terms of accessibility, and to those with older devices who are forced to look for alternatives. However, the standard version has several additional features that may be helpful to many as it is widely used.

The actual date of termination is not mentioned in the report, it only says January 2024.
